A customer calls you about their balance. You open their record in Odoo… and the button that led to their account is no longer there. Since Odoo 18, you have to go back through the Accounting menu, open the partner ledger and type the customer’s name into the filter again, every single time. In this article, you will see what changed in standard Odoo, what our Partner Ledger Button module brings back to the contact form, and the limits it accepts.
1. The button that vanished from the contact form
Up to Odoo 17, the form of a customer or vendor showed a button to the Partner Ledger. One click, and all their journal items were in front of you.
This button disappeared as of Odoo 18. The method behind it still exists in the code, flagged as deprecated, but no view calls it any more. In Odoo 19, the form only offers the Due button, which opens the follow-up report. In Odoo 20, it is the Open Items button.
To see the full account of a partner, the standard path is now: Accounting › Reporting › Partner Reports › Partner Ledger, then filter on the partner by hand. Four menu levels and a filter to type, for a question that comes up with every call from a customer or vendor.
💡 Key takeaway
The report has not gone away; only the shortcut from the contact form was removed. The need, however, is still there.
2. Two buttons on the contact form
The Partner Ledger Button module adds two smart buttons at the top of the contact form, next to the ones you already know:
- Partner Ledger opens the report already filtered on this contact, fully unfolded. You keep all the usual report filters (dates, journals, accounts). From the form of a person linked to a company, it is the company’s ledger that opens.
- To Reconcile opens the list of this contact’s unreconciled journal items, ready to be matched.
In Odoo 18 and 20, when the form already shows many buttons, these two can tuck themselves under More, like the others. No configuration is needed: once the module is installed, the buttons are there for every user with the right access. The module creates no model and writes nothing to the database.
💡 Key takeaway
The account of a customer or vendor is once again one click away, from where you already work: their form.
3. Reconcile without retyping the filter
The partner ledger is a report: you can read it, but it does not let you match an open invoice with its payment. In standard Odoo, reconciling therefore means a second trip through the Reconcile menu, with the same partner filter to enter all over again.
The module adds a Reconcile button to the partner ledger toolbar. It opens the list of unreconciled journal items, filtered on the partners selected in the report. You tick the lines that match and reconcile them as usual.
Reconciliation itself works exactly as before: the module simply opens Odoo’s standard list in the right place.
💡 Key takeaway
From the finding (“this customer has an open invoice”) to the action (“I reconcile it with its payment”), there is no filter left to retype.
4. What the module does not do, and why
A shortcut should not open a door that standard Odoo keeps closed. The module therefore follows Odoo’s access rights, without inventing any:
- the Partner Ledger button follows the access rights of the Partner Ledger menu;
- the To Reconcile and Reconcile buttons only appear with the Show Full Accounting Features option, exactly like Odoo’s Reconcile menu.
It is a deliberate trade-off: a user who cannot reconcile from the menu will not be able to from the form either. If some of your staff should be able to reconcile and cannot, the issue lies with their access rights, not with the module.
Another limit: the module is reserved for Odoo Enterprise, because it relies on the Enterprise accounting reports. It does not work on Community. If you are still torn between the two editions, our Odoo process audit helps you decide based on your actual accounting.
💡 Key takeaway
The module shortens the path; it does not widen access: everyone sees on the form what they could already see through the menu.
